Katie Eary pulls one out of the hat again. Her field day previously with pink flamingos to flaming leopard prints segued into a vision of Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club that opened the show this season. Admittedly, binge-watching cowboys on TV and on the silver screen had a lot to do with it. Katy Eary’s “Dallas Rodeo” was conceived “post being obsessed with Breaking Bad” and the Jean-Marc Vallée film starring McConaughey, according to the press release.
Safe to say Katie Eary was very much on trend as her collection bore the two things London Collections: Men was big on: Japonaiserie and the seventies. Her cowboy collection projected into the distant future where leather-patched denim wearing rednecks traverse into the Far East with silk Rodeo shirts matched with solarized aviators; skintight turtle necks paired with silk knit polos.
Koinobori lantern prints were appropriated and melded with kitschy cactus set against a sunset palette. Perhaps in the future, cowboys no longer toil in the desert sun; here they are more inclined to sip green tea in the Hokkaido twilight fashioning psychedelic silk scarves and purple-fringed biker jackets. It is certainly a stretch of the imagination but perhaps that is one of Eary’s finest qualities.
